How did Renaissance musicians balance their creative and practical lives? Drawing on Peri's many unpublished account books and letters, this exemplary collaborative study explores how one famous Florentine composer-performer successfully combined business, finance, and family management with a musical career at the Medici court. Fascinating and original, it will delight social and cultural historians as well as those of music and the economy.--Suzanne B. Butters, University of ManchesterWhat is known about the circumstances of composers living and working in Italy during this period is often disarmingly skeletal. Through their detailed exploration of the 'Peri Archive' from different historical perspectives--musical, social, and, above all, economic--the authors have fascinatingly illuminated the interlocking spheres of the complex existence of one of the most significant composers of the time.--Iain Fenlon, University of CambridgeIn this bravura example of interdisciplinary history at its finest, two scholars of matchless erudition use the remarkably well-preserved traces of one man's life to provide a fascinating account of economic and musical practice in Florence at the turn of the seventeenth century. Through Jacopo Peri's story, Carter and Goldthwaite indispensably show how social status and wealth might contribute to a musician's aesthetic stance, reputation, and, eventually, canonicity.--Suzanne G. Cusick, New York UniversityQuietly thrilling...[Carter and Goldthwaite] offer a sustained analysis of a recently discovered trove of account books belonging to Jacopo Peri (1561-1633), one of the earliest opera composers. What they reveal has implications for both music history and our understanding of an economy and society in transition, and is a model of interdisciplinary collaboration in the humanities...Even ordinary music lovers will find the exploration of the still underrated Peri intriguing.-- (11/28/2013)

In order to be helpful a review of this book requires some explanation, since readers with distinct experiences, interests, and perspectives will likely react quite differently ... those seeking an intensive study of Peri's part in the history of opera may be disappointed, but those seeking a broader perspective on the life and times of Jacopo Peri (1561-1633) will be rewarded with much to ponder (providing ... well, see below).Co-authors Carter (noted musical historian) and Goldthwaite (eminent scholar of Renaissance Italy) combine to paint a portrait of Peri, based upon the study of the subject's 'recordi' (account books or ledgers). These books include more than accounting entries and thus serve as the basis for reasonable conjecture about the man himself (the authors admit that the record is not nearly complete enough to definitively characterize Peri).Several broad conclusions arise from the record, however. Peri, composer of 'Euridice' (1600), generally considered the earliest opera to survive intact (it included the recitative we commonly associate with early opera), defined himself not exclusively as a musician, but as a 'signore' (not an elite, but certainly a man of distinction). His striving for social status was consistent with the changing hierarchical structure of Medici-dominated Florence. Peri actively (and successfully) engaged in commerce and finance as a matter of personal ambition as well as economic/social status. Music may have provided him opportunity and earned him a stipend from the court, but it was mainly the other activities that fed his larger self-image (quite literally, as a Renaissance Man). By extension, there is something here to be said about the history and nature of opera in more general terms. And here is the caveat: in order to paint this portrait, the co-authors review the 'recordi' extensively and with thoroughness. The results are long passages dealing with Peri's investments in the wool and silk industries and with financial instruments. Details of business transactions will likely and understandably bore some readers ... however if you have a taste for it (or at minimum, a tolerance), your persistence will be rewarded. The pay-off is that a reader develops a greater sense of Peri's actual daily life and concerns, as well as the lives and concerns of others prominent Florentines. It reminds us that opera was and is a product of many ambitions, forces, and motivations. In the book the authors cite a seventeenth-century Venetian as having written: "Who can deny that double-entry bookkeeping is akin to music?" As a retired banker, one-time CPA, and more recently an opera lecturer, I, for one, would have to politely deny it no matter how many times that cock crows. Unfortunately (for some) that is where we find Peri the person, and fortunately (for others) Carter and Goldthwaite have grandly done so.
